Kindle DX : Customer Review

Kindle DX : Great in every way except typing

I had heard about the Kindle DX in mid May and decided to give it a try. I found that it serves its purpose in every way since it is very simple to use and truly gives the experience of reading an actual page minus the bulk or hassle of finding the perfect way to hold it.
I prefer to hold it vertically as it is designed, but I have found it just as easy to hold it landscape or upside down if you prefer having the page buttons on the left.
Additionally, it is unbelievably simple to purchase a book whether it be through my Kindle DX, online delivered through Whispernet, or by downloading it onto my computer and then syncing it with my Kindle DX (this feature was extremely useful when I ran out of books out of the country).
The only design feature that bothers me is how difficult it is to type notes or search for books on it. The device is too wide for the keypad. I need to put the device down in order to reach the center keys with both hands (instead of holding it and typing with my thumbs).
Otherwise, I love the Kindle in every way, including the experimental features. The internet works fairly well for being in its early stages and the text-to-speech is far more human-like than other programs. Of course, however, it does not beat an audiobook.
Overall, it is an incredible product that is somewhat addicting.

Review Kindle DX

I have had my Kindle for about a month so far, and I love my Kindle DX and very happy with my purchase. So far, the couple of drawbacks I have seen and would like to see in future kindles is that I really, really wish it had a backlight so I could read it when it starts to get dark. When it starts to get dusk or when we go camping, my husband goes to bed early, I would like to read my Kindle so I don’t disturb him and without having to have the stupid separate light. I’m always trying to figure out where I had put it last. Also, I don’t care for how the screen rotates automatically. I would prefer it to rotate when I indicate it should. Because I have problems with my arms and wrists, I tend to hold my book at a slant and the Kindle will rotate the screen, frustrating me to no end. And, lastly, I would like the Kindle to accept HTML’s without having to send them Amazon to reformat and then Amazon charging me for each book they reformat. I had an old Rocket so I have lots and lots of HTML’s. I believe I shouldn’t be charged anything to reformat any of my ebooks to load onto my Kindle. Other than those few drawbacks, I would really recommend the Kindle DX. Because it can hold so many books, I really like the idea of putting all my books on my Kindle so I can read, and re-read, any of my books at any time. I carry it with me everywhere. Good job, Amazon. Just correct those minor problems and you would have an absolute winner and one I would eagerly upgrade to.

Kindle DX: Bigger Screen

Kindle DX: Bigger Screen, Higher Price, Many Questions

By Calvin Reid

Ending a week of heavy media speculation, Amazon.com CEO Jeff Bezos unveiled the new, larger-format Kindle DX in front of about 200 journalists and camera crews at Pace University in lower Manhattan. Using a giant projection screen, Bezos delivered a presentation on the Kindle DX, which is essentially a Kindle 2 with a bigger, 9.7-inch screen; a new “native” PDF reader; and three gigabytes of storage that will sell for $489. Bezos also announced agreements to launch a pilot program with six universities that will distribute the Kindle DX to students and load the devices with textbooks from three of the largest U.S. textbook publishers—Pearson, Cengage and John Wiley—as well as a newspaper deal with the New York Times, Boston Globe and Washington Post. But while much of the early speculation about the Kindle DX focused on its ability to deliver newspapers, Amazon’s pilot agreement with the universities and publishers seems just as critical to the device’s future and fraught with many pitfalls.

Despite the Kindle DX’s enhanced display (and a few new but minor features), questions remain about whether the device is likely to gain traction in the newspaper market, let alone in a higher-education textbook market long focused on highly discounted, full-color digital textbook editions. In published reports, Dallas Morning News publisher James Moroney has already noted that Amazon’s terms to newspapers (Amazon gets 70% of revenues and wants licensing rights) are not looked on favorably by the industry. And while the universities involved in the school distribution agreement—Arizona State, Case Western Reserve, Princeton, Reed College, Pace University and the University of Virginia—tout the device’s potential utility and the opportunity to survey student feedback, they offer few details of how the plan will be structured. Will either the device or the books be subsidized in some way or will students pay full price for books or device?

When questioned, the answer from both the universities and the publishers has been “more information to come,” including questions about just how many students will be involved in the pilot. At the press conference, Case Western president Barbara Snyder said the Kindle DX pilot would put “thousands” of books on the device and allow the schools to “see how the device affects learning and relationships with teachers.” Pace University provost Geoffrey L. Brackett told PW he expects to have at least 50 Pace students “from discrete sections of coursework,” including students from its publishing program, in the pilot program by the fall semester. Brackett suggested that Pace may subsidize some of the cost of the device while students pay full price for the e-textbooks; he was quick to emphasize “we’re still working out the details.”

While there have been reports that the pilot may include only about 300 students, at the press conference Laura Porco, director of Kindle Books, told PW that the pilot would include “hundreds to thousands” of students as well as “hundreds to thousands of books.” She also stressed to PW that Amazon did not plan to discount the e-textbooks used in the pilot. While Amazon has offered professional titles in Kindle editions, it’s a first for Amazon to offer Kindle editions of highly formatted academic texts for higher education. Asked about pricing, Pearson spokesperson Wendy Spiegel said she was unable to provide answers just yet. “The ink isn’t dry on this agreement,” she said, noting that the books, the disciplines covered and the price points were still to be discussed in “conversations to come.” PW received a similar response from John Wiley and Cengage. Spiegel also pointed out that in 2008, 25% of Pearson’s textbook sales from pre-k through higher education come from digital content. Indeed, Pearson offers students access to Web-based texts through CourseSmart, a consortium of six major textbook publishers (including the three publishers in the pilot), that offers access to more than 6,000 digital texts at half the list price of the print edition. Do students (and universities) really want a new device designed to provide access to more expensive digital textbook editions?

That said, Kindle is undeniably popular among customers. Bezos said 35% of all Amazon book sales of titles available in print and digital formats are Kindle editions, up from 10% early in the year. But can a large-screen black-and-white dedicated reading device that costs nearly $500 with relatively low computing power and a clunky mechanical navigational system compete in an educational marketplace in which students often have powerful full-color miniature netbooks ($500 and much less) and laptops (just as cheap)—not to mention a slew of sleek touch screen handhelds like the iPhone and iPod Touch? So far, neither Amazon, the publishers or the universities present at the Kindle DX press conference seemed able to provide any answers to that question.

Kindle DX is The Winner

Kindle DX is the winner

After using IRex, Sony, Kindle 2, I can safely say that Kindle DX is a clear winner. Previously, Sony had best resolution, IRex with decent PDF support and Kindle with its wireless convenience and dictionary. Kindle DX gives me all. Its native PDF conversion is very good and display better than I expected even for non-English documents.

I always found Sony’s contrast and display better than Kindle 2 but Kindle DX screen looks as good if not better.

Its mp3 and audible player sounds as good as iPod.

Of course it is bigger and heavier. A card slot’d have been better and a built-in light like Sony, but Kindle DX delivers without putting a dent in your wallet.

The Best Kindle Yet!

I have the two previous Kindles, and the Kindle DX is the best yet. The screen is much larger than I expected, and I think that the photographs are much cleaner looking on the DX. I thought that the DX was faster when looking on the web, but the only site I went to was the Amazon site. The screen is just incredible. I cannot wait for a color e-ink, but for now I am very happy with the Kindle DX. If I had to choose between the three Kindle’s I would buy the DX. The price difference is worth the larger screen. The whole Kindle 2 fits inside the screen of the DX.

A nice change is no buttons on the left side so that you can hold the Kindle without pushing buttons. I still think the Kindle needs a place to hold for people with larger hands, but the DX is an improvement. I do wish they did not eliminate the numbers row of keys and place them with the top row of letters. The buttons look sleeker on the Kindle DX, but I like the feel of the buttons on the Kindle 2 better. Again, I have larger hands and the buttons are a bit awkward. If you are left-handed, you can flip the Kindle upside down, and hold the Kindle with your right hand without hitting buttons. A benefit of the screen adjusting to any way you chose to hold the Kindle DX.

The price is a bit high, but if you read a lot, it is worth it. It is completely different than reading on a computer; so much less eye strain. As an educator, I would love to see a student price so that students could afford them. As a doctoral student, I love being able to use the Kindles in my doctoral work. I do miss the SD port that the first Kindle DX has. I think that the next Kindle should have the SD port again and a better place to hold the unit. Still, I thank you Amazon for a great product.

Q & A on Kindle DX

Q & A on Kindle DX

Q. Why did you purchase a Kindle DX?

A. I love to read, and I read alot. Accordingly, the Kindle DX, while expensive, is likely to “pay” for itself in a relatively short time, for anyone who likes to read New Releases. Yes, you can check things out from the library, but for avid readers who like to plow through New Releases, the Kindle is a nice luxury that supports the healthy habit of reading.

Q. Yeah, but that thing is expensive. Why not the Kindle 2?

A. Who said anything about the Kindle 2? Buy the Kindle 2.

Q. Ok, but why did YOU buy the Kindle DX and not the 2?

A. Oh, well that’s because of a couple of features that were important to me. First, the screen is larger, and that is helpful to me. Second, I like the pdf capability and use it.

Q. And that was worth the extra $100+ dollars?

A. For me, yes. Maybe not for you…and in that instance, buy the 2.

Q. Ok, so what is the first book that you downloaded?

A. Scratch Beginnings by Adam Shephard.

Q. Does it come with a case or a light?

A. No and no… and this is one bone to pick with Amazon. At that price, a protective case, even a cheap one, should be included. I would like to point out for those that bash this “no backlight” thing that just about every paper book I’ve ever purchased did not come with a “backlight” front light, side light, or any other kind of light. I tend to read near a lamp, and so that works. And I have a reading light that I can use in bed or in a car, and whaddya know, that works too.

Q. No color? How come no color?

A. What’s the last paper book you read that was written in color?

Q. Ok, fair point, but what about with periodicals and such?

A. I suspect that eventually we will see color Kindles. I am not sure the technology is available yet at this price point. I, for one, am pleased with the readability of a Kindle DX in black and white.

Q. Ok, so is it easy to use?

A. Oh, I think so. For anyone remotely tech savvy, you can figure out the Kindle DX on the fly…. but the user manual that is loaded onto the Kindle is helpful, and there are lots of online sources for information if you’re really stuck.

Q. Is the bigger screen really a plus?

A. For me, it really is. Sometimes, I need to increase the font size for reading comfort and the larger screen really makes it still feel like I’m reading a book and accomplishing something with each turn of the page.

Q. Is the screen really “better” or “improved?”

A. While I do not own a Kindle 1 or 2, I have read from both. In my opinion the Kindle DX is crisper and blacker, and in that sense, for me, yes, it is better.

Q. What’s with the screen shift?

A. Ah, you mean where you can turn it sideways and the screen shifts so that you can read, panoramic style. That feature has it’s advantages as well. First, you might find it a more comfortable way to read. Second, with PDF documents, sometimes, it’s the view you need.

Q. How’s the battery life?

A. Oh it’s great. So far, I’m still working off the first charge. Look, I think all of these readers have better than decent battery life. One keye is to remember to turn the wireless mode off if you want to extend the batter life. If you are a subscriber to blogs, etc…..you’ll need the wireless on for the downloads, but otherwise, keep it off. I imagine 2 weeks of reading with no wireless on is actually very achieveable. Now, not reading around the clock for two weeks, but with moderate usage, it lasts and lasts. This is NOT like some Walkman that burns double A’s in 3 hours.

Q. How is the download time?

A. I received Scratch Beginnings in under 18 seconds. I couldn’t have walked to the kitchen to get me keys to drive to the bookstore in 18 seconds. I also couldn’t have fired up my computer to purchase the book online in under 18 seconds.

Q. What about the range?

A. I’m in a metropolitan area. I have no problems. I’ve taken it to the mountains of North Carolina already, again, no problems.

Q. What about out of the country?

A. We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it. Honestly, I plan to download a few books before I go…..

Q. What about people who complain that it isn’t green?

A. Oh for the love of humanity. You can’t please all the people all the time. Look, I read alot. I don’t need or want to own hundreds of books that OH BY THE WAY were printed on paper from trees. I don’t want to store them, put them in landfills, or whatever. This works for me. I hope it works for you.

Q. Yeah, but there are toxins in th…..

A. There are toxins in ice cream. I’m not going to stop eating that either.

Q. Didn’t you see that 20/20Frontline/48 Hours/iTeam investigation/New Magazine/Blah boo Blah show that talks about all the lead and mercury and hazardous stuff that children in Third World Nations are exposed to because you bought a Kindle.

A. Yes……no, wait……that wasn’t the story! Look, I love the environment and please know I try to do my part to protect same. I promise I won’t put my Kindle in the landfill, nor will I have it shipped to Naperstania where young children will be exposed to the evils of whatever might be in my Kindle. I expect to own the Kindle far longer than most books that I have owned in the past. I’m not trying to put magazines out of business, but really, I don’t need the mail, and the wasted paper and the ink and everything else. You give and you get, you know?

Q. Isn’t this just a fad?

A. I don’t think so. I think the Kindle DX could be the solution to college student spending hundreds of dollars per semester on text books and then having to lug them around for classes and trying to get rid of them when the semester is over. The uses of the Kindle DX in the education environment are all plusses. I believe the Kindle line and copies will be around for a long, long time. And if I’m wrong, I’ll come back and edit the review and admit I was wrong.

Q. Is it durable?

A. I haven’t dropped it and don’t want to….but I believe that it is durable. The screen is not like a laptop screen…. it’s more durable, in my view. I recommend getting a case or at least a protective cover. One does want to avoid scratches and unnecessary bumps with ANY electronic device. Again, Amazon should include a cover. Are you listening Amazon?

UPDATE: I dropped it. About 3.5 feet. It hit carpet. It’s fine. Not a scratch on it. Works just like it did before I dropped it. I did utter something that’s not PG when I dropped it….and I’m sorry for that now.

Q. Is it heavy?

A. It’s not heavy. It’s heavier than the Kindle 1 and 2. It’s got some heft to it. But it’s not unwieldy as larger books can be. And you don’t get that horrible thumb fatigue from holding the book upon with your thumb wedged in the bottom in the middle. I don’t find holding the Kindle DX awkward at all. I will say this though… I’m a rightie, and the buttons are all on the right. Perhaps some lefties will not appreciate that fact, but it’s not difficult to navigate at all. Reading with one hand and mashing buttons is a bit more clumsy than with the 1 or 2, but it’s fine.

Q. How’s the keyboard?

A. I think it works just fine. But lookie here…. I have an LG ENV mobile phone, in part, because it has a QWERTY keyboard with raised buttons. My big ol fingers and thumbs work better on little raised surfaces. So, the Kindle QWERTY is just my style. I’m not a touch screen sort of person. In fact, I have been known to become angry with various touch screen Kiosks - for example - at IKEA. But that is a story for another day.

Q. What happens if I spill something on it.

A. Don’t.

Q. How’s that little “mouse” button?

A. Easy to use. At first, I was concerned, because I sort of have fat thumbs. And, I was afraid that with overuse, it might get sticky or something. But, it’s easy to use. I don’t make mistakes with it, despite it’s small size.

Q. Will the Kindle DX make me cool?

A. No. The Kindle DX IS cool, but it will not make YOU cool, if you are not already cool. I am not particularly cool, and I also tend to think that trying to be cool because you have gadgetry is sort of pathetic.

Q. Is the Kindle a good conversation starter?

A. Why, yes it is…. and usually the conversation starts with, “Oh, is that one of those Kenny thingies?”

Q. What else can the Kindle DX do?

A. Scramble eggs and secure the perimeter. I don’t know, why are you asking this?

Q. Well, I’m trying to decide if it’s worth it…

A. If you aren’t an avid reader, NO, it’s not worth it. Look, for someone who always has a nose in a book, reads more than one at a time, reads alot, or quickly, OR for someone who wants to get the latest George Will columns, or magazine, etc…..the Kindle is a great little tool. It’s worth it. If you don’t read that much… stick to the old way.

Q. Do you do all of your reviews this way?

A. No.

Q. Why did you Q & A this one?

A. Because it seemed like more fun than just writing it out in long paragraphs.

The Kindle DX is an excellent device.

The ease with which one can search for and download a book is just wonderful. I realize this works with all Kindles, but folks, let me tell you…. with your Kindle Account, you can search for a book, order it with one click and, I KID YOU NOT, have the entire book on the Kindle in about 10 seconds. Now, does it MATTER whether it’s 10 seconds or 50 seconds or 78 seconds? No.

Of course not.

But I am one to marvel at the speed of things. And this downloading service is really great.

I also want to address one of the more common comments that I get in public when someone sees the Kindle and starts asking questions and then decides to soapbox for a bit.

I get this alot: “Don’t you like to hold a real book? I LOVE to hold a real book! I think I’d miss the holding of a real book. Sometimes, you just want to hold a real book.”

MY ANSWER: Yes, sometimes you want to hold a real book. Maybe you like the cover art. Maybe you have a unique edition. Maybe you like the smell of the paper. Maybe you feel more bookish with a real book. That’s you. There’s nothing wrong with you. You’re a lovely human being. More power to you. Buy or borrow all the real books you want and read, read, read.

I have no reason to hold a real book in my hands. I don’t love the smell of an old book. Cover art doesn’t usually light my fire. I don’t feel more bookish with a real book. I just want to read a good book, and the Kindle DX makes it easy to obtain and then read what I want to read.

Another thing. I tend to have my nose in more than one book at a time. Sometimes, I’m not in the mood for the biography I’m reading, and a little golf humor makes my day. I don’t have to bring 2-3 books long with me and wait for the mood to strike. The Kindle DX has them all right there. Nice and easy.

Believe me… I’m as uptight and traditional as the next person, but again, for me, the Kindle makes sense. So, there’s really nothing to “defend” so to speak. I would never, in a million years, put down someone who just likes to feel the paper. Accordingly, please grant me the pleasure of swooning over the feel of the smooth, white plastic.

Kindle DX Reviews

Kindle DX Reviews

When it comes to making the choice as to what e-book reader is right for you, the first thing that many people realize is that there is a whole lot of choices. Which one to choose though really depends on what you are looking for in a device. Perhaps you would like the ability to store up to 3,500 e-books on one device or maybe you would like a reader whose batteries won’t die before you are finished reading. Or perhaps you would like one that does not require you hooking it up to your computer every time you would like to add to your library. If you are like most people, these are the things that you are looking for and what that means is that you are in need of a Kindle DX.

This latest version of the popular e-book reader has gone through a drastic overhaul while still maintain many of the great features that people have grown to love about it. It still features the automatically rotating display that is composed of Amazon’s e-ink design. This new version though, unlike it predecessor is capable of supporting PDF files without the need for an online conversion.

This PDF support has been a much anticipated update due to the popularity of this file format with regards to online reading material. Of course you cannot help but notice the Amazon Kindle DX’s increased display size because unlike its 6 inch predecessor, this display is an amazing 9.7 inches. That makes reading those books a much simpler process, especially if your eyes are not what they used to be. Many people have heard that the new device is being released and they are searching all over the web for Kindle DX reviews, but the truth is that if you like the previous models, then you will definitely love this one.

Kindle DX Vs Kindle 2.0

In the world of e-book readers, you have a lot of choices to select from but what name has stood out from the crowd since its inception and that is the Amazon KindleDX. Of course there is always plenty of room for improvement as Amazon has shown with their recently release of their Amazon Kindle DX. Let us compare for a moment the Kindle DX vs. Kindle 2.0 models. This version of the reader features a much larger 9.7 inch display using the popular e-ink design. It is also capable of storing up to 3,500 different books and includes the much anticipated native PDF support. The display is auto-orientating so it will adjust as you move it around. It still hold the popular 3G wireless technology which allows you free access to download the books you are wanting.

On the other hand though, the standard model only has a 6 inch display which is auto-orienting. It can only hold up to 1,500 books and does not support PDF natively as it requires them to be converted online before downloading them to the device. One of the main reasons why the standard Kindle has not been as popular was due to its lacking ability to support the PDF files which can be found all over the internet. With the release of the Kindle DX though, this issue can be considered a thing of the past.

It is important to remember though that the display is known as e-ink. What this is, is it is a specially designed display that is capable of 16 shades of grey and give the appearance is if you were actually looking at paper. It reflects light the same manner as book paper and its contrast is also very similar which means there is no need for a back light. No backlight also means that the batteries will last a longer time in comparison to other readers which are currently available.

Kindle DX Accessories

Kindle DX accessories from M-Edge unveiled

The Amazon Kindle is a cool gadget and has been one of the most popular devices on Amazon since it launched. Not too long ago Amazon unveiled a new larger screen Kindle designed with reading newspapers in mind called the Kindle DX.

The Kindle DX lacked any sort of protective cover for the large screen, which meant that if users weren’t careful they could scratch the expensive gadget. A company called M-Edge has announced a new line of cases for the Kindle DX that includes the Executive Jacket and the Platform Jacket.

The Executive Jacket sells for $59.99, has a wrap around strap for closure, and comes in real or synthetic leather. The Platform Jacket covers the screen of the Kindle DX and has a built in stand to keep the reader upright for hands free reading and it sells for $59.99. Both products are set to ship on June 10.

Will the new Kindle DX save the news industry?

Will the new Kindle DX save the news industry?

No. It’s too little, too late, and for too much.

The 9.7-inch-screen big brother to the present 6-inch Kindle has arrived while dozens of newspapers are rapidly circling the toilet despite massive layoffs and massive wage givebacks. They will fail before the Kindle DX is out (it’s to be released this summer) in sufficient numbers and with sufficient subscribers to electronic newspapers and magazines to attract enough advertising that will start a turnaround in the industry.

The Kindle DX is also way too expensive — $489 — to sell to most potential subscribers. It still offers only black print on a white surface, while newspaper readers are used to bright color graphics.

I’ll say it’s likely that future Kindles and their perhaps colorful competitors (some of which will arrive late this year) will be the eventual engine for consuming news. But the shakeout in the newspaper and magazine industry will already have occurred, and our choices will be limited to just a few national papers and whatever local rags have managed to keep their heads above water.

The Kindle DX, however, may save the exchequers of university students. Printed and bound textbooks are filthy expensive, often going for more than $150 even well used, and if textbook publishers can offer their wares electronically at half the print price, the Kindle DX will be a bargain for Joe College.

As for the rest of us, it’s too bad we didn’t have this new technology a couple of years ago when it was needed most.
