New Cameras & Camcorders
New HD Camcorders Weigh 0.5 LB, Packed with Easy-to-Use, Advanced Features

Panasonic today announced the release of two of the world’s lightest*, High Definition (HD) camcorders – the Panasonic HDC-SD10, which uses an SDHC/SD Memory Card as recording media, and the Twin Memory Type Panasonic HDC-TM10, which records onto both an 8GB** Built-in Memory and an SDHC/SD Memory Card. Each model weighs just 0.5 LB, yet its compact body design has a high-powered 16x optical zoom capabilities and advanced features to produce beautiful 1920 x 1080 Full-HD videos.

The 16x optical zoom of the Panasonic HDC-SD10 and Panasonic HDC-TM10 is supported by the Advanced O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) function – an essential element to achieve clear zooming, as it minimizes the hand-shake that often impairs video quality while zooming. Panasonic’s Advanced OIS detects and corrects for hand-shake around 4,000 times per second and works with the high-powered optical zoom to produce clear, stable zoom shots. The new Active mode also extends the hand-shake correction range to allow the shooting of clear, crisp images while walking or moving.

“We recognize that users are looking for camcorders that capture high-quality, High Definition video, but they also want something lightweight that has advanced, yet easy-to-use functions,” said Chuck Kirkman, Senior Product Manager, Imaging, Panasonic Consumer Electronics Company. “With the SD10 and TM10, we’ve made it easier to record HD video with features such as Advanced O.I.S., Face Detection, Intelligent Scene Selector and the Pre-Rec function, all which maximize shooting results and minimize common issues like blurring.”

As with most Panasonic camcorders, the Panasonic HDC-SD10 and Panasonic HDC-TM10 both feature the iA (Intelligent Auto)*** function, which automatically sets the most suitable Scene mode according to shooting conditions. These include Advanced O.I.S., Face Detection, which adjusts the exposure so faces are captured perfectly; Intelligent Contrast Control, which helps ensure proper contrast; and Intelligent Scene Selector, which determines the shooting conditions and automatically selects the Scene setting that will provide optimal results. Both camcorders are also equipped with AF/AE Tracking (Auto Focus/Auto Exposure Tracking), which automatically tracks a moving subject for consistently beautiful images. This feature maintains the focus and exposure even if the subject moves or turns to one side.
The Panasonic HDC-SD10 and Panasonic HDC-TM10 are both compatible with Panasonic’s VIERA Link to allow quick and easy viewing of Full-HD video content, as well as with the VIERA Image Viewer function on a VIERA HDTV. This allows users to play videos on a large screen by simply inserting a recorded SDHC/SD Memory Card into the SD Card slot of a Panasonic VIERA HDTV******. It provides instant playback of video clips recorded in the AVCHD format in Full-HD quality. Similarly, video recordings can be easily played by using a Panasonic Blu-ray Disc™ player.

The suggested retail prices of the Panasonic HDC-SD10 and Panasonic HDC-TM10 are $549.95 and $599.95 respectively. The TM10 will be available in black and silver models, while the SD10 in black only. All models will be available in 2009.

VIXIA HF

I consider myself a serious amateur videographer/photographer. I used many different brands of video cameras while working as a TV journalist in the 1990s. After leaving the TV news industry, I bid farewell to all those heavy video equipment. Currently, I have a Nikon D300 DSLR and a Canon XHA1 HD camcorder that are much lighter in weight and more compact in sizes. I’m happy with these prosumer products. I truly enjoy shooting these still/video cameras during my frequent travels/weekend outings.

The challenge came when I took my baby girl to Moab, UT and Aspen, CO for my family trip in May 2009. I had to carry my baby while my wife carried a big diaper bag… you know what I mean. I realized I couldn’t carry my Canon XHA1/Nikon D300 combo while carrying my girl in a baby carrier. Anticipating all these challenges, I decided to buy an ultra-light, ultra-handy camcorder for the first time. Amazon sent me Canon HF S100 a few days before the trip. What a relief!

My experience with this Canon camcorder during the trip was amazing. I carried the camcorder in a tiny camcorder bag. Shooting was a breeze with my 2-year-old girl on my back. The image was as stunning as I could find from my Canon XHA1. Some people point out a picture quality at low-light situations, but I found it acceptable. I wanted to use a tripod from time to time to get more steady shots, but my baby didn’t allow me to spend time for my serious videography. Without using the tripod, some shots turned out to be a little shaky but still editable. I only had one battery (didn’t have time to order an extra battery), but each day I had enought battery life. I always shoot people/nature with video editing in mind using Final Cut Pro. I don’t shoot 10-20 minutes nonstop. If you shoot wisely and selectively during your travel, you’ll know even one battery will last entire day. All you need to do is to recharge the battery at a motel before you go to bed.

Although my evaluation on this camcorder is solely based on my recent family vacation, I’ve learned that I cannot carry full-sized video equipment to many travels and vacations. I recommend this camcorder to anyone who plans to travel with his/her family. Travel light, be happy.

My only disappointment with this camcorder is its seemingly excellent still feature. I tried 20-30 still shots with this camcorder, but found the picture quality is still incomparable to images from a dedicated digital still camera. Oh, well. Bring another Canon digicam if you really want amazing travel photographs.

Panasonic HDC-TM300 HD Camcorder

The Panasonic HDC-TM300 Twin Media HD camcorder offers the choice of recording to the 32 GB HDD or SD/SDHC memory card, and the 3MOS system with three full-HD sensors has one of the world’s highest total pixel counts. The TM300 provides high image quality for both motion and 10.6-megapixel resolution still images. And it features high 8.3-megapixel resolution for still images when recording simultaneously with motion images. You can also enjoy a 5.1-channel surround sound system with 5 microphones featuring Zoom and Focus Mic functions.

The manual ring gives you easy, fingertip control over the focus, zoom and exposure settings. This lets you create images that just aren’t possible with automatic functions. And the AF Tracking has been added to the iA function which automatically judges the scene and makes the best possible settings, so the TM300 keeps the subject in focus even if the subject’s face turns away from the camcorder.

To view recorded images as quickly as possible, the TM300 features a new highlight playback function. This gives you a quick, easy way to view the most exciting scenes all together. The HD Writer AE 1.0 editing software also has a new function that lets you easily upload your video clips to the YouTube website.
