Editorial Reviews

From the Manufacturer
Manufacturer’s Review (April 20, 2009)
With the Samsung 40-inch LN40B650 HDTV, you’re investing in a high-quality LCD TV that offers top-of-the-line picture quality with 1080p high definition resolution. Enjoy the sharpest details and vivid color with a 100,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio for more realistic images and Samsung’s Wide Color Enhancer 3 technology for a more natural rendering of colors. It also incorporates a number of innovative features to reduce the motion blur and image judder, which traditionally plague LCD HDTVs when displaying fast movement. This B650 series HDTV combines an ultra-fast 4ms (millisecond) response time with Samsung’s Auto Motion Plus frame interpolation technology, which utilizes a 120Hz refresh rate helps ensure crisp, easy viewing of sports, video games and movies.

The stylish Samsung LN40B650 1080p HDTV with innovative Touch of Color design.

The LN40B650 features Samsung’s new Internet@TV online content service. Developed with Yahoo!, Internet@TV uses either a wired or wireless Ethernet connection to access content onscreen from Yahoo!, Flickr, YouTube and more with the push of a button. The widget-based interface and scrollbar run along the bottom of the screen for easy browsing of the latest programs and content. This B650 model also includes a 2 GB flash memory with pre-loaded entertainment features that can be updated by downloading content from Samsung’s web site via the Ethernet connection

You get superb connectivity and networking with 2 USB ports–for playing MP3 audio and displaying JPEG/MPEG files–and four HDMI 1.3 ports, and it also bumps up the sound with 15-watt bottom stereo speaker and an integrated subwoofer. This HDTV is accented by Samsung’s TOC (Touch of Color) bezel design, which offers a hint of red translucent color around the edges of the unit for a uniquely fashionable look. Plus, it’s Energy Star compliant, which helps you be green while saving on your electric bill.

In addition to this 40-inch model, the Samsung B650 series also includes the 1080p 32-inch LN32B650, 37-inch LN37B650, 46-inch LN46B650, and 55-inch LN55B650 as well as the 720p 19-inch LN19B650 and 22-inch LN22B650. (Learn more about what size TV should you get.)

Wide Color Enhancer 2/Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp

Wide Color Enhancer 2 The NTSC (National Television Systems Committee) has established the color standards all TVs in America try to meet. And typical LCD TVs only meet about 72 percent of this standard. Samsung LCD HDTVs use Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp backlights to give you 92 percent coverage of the NTSC standard, ensuring truer, more breathlessly vivid colors.Samsung’s Wide Color Enhancer 3 technology delivers more brilliant colors by expanding the gamut of color expression into a third axis, creating a 3D diagram of luminance. This creates a dynamic display of on-screen color and allows traditionally weak colors, such as green and blue, to look vivid and deep. In addition, red colors are enhanced to provide strong colors across the spectrum and the perfect balance of RGB.

The intensity of the color subtly changes depending upon the viewing angle, and further accentuates these TV’s slim bezels.

STUNNING. Period.5
I’m happy to be the first to rate this wonderful LCD. I’ll be short and to the point, and maybe come back and supplement this review after a few more weeks of use.

Aesthetically, the TV is clean and elegant. Love the touch of red. Love the crystal base. Love the fact that it swivels. It’s a beautiful piece of equipment, and looks a good bit more modern than the more curvilinear A model. I’m very happy I waited for this one.

Set up was a snap. Took me about 2 minutes to connect the base. It took longer to remove the stickers. The manual is on a little USB drive that plugs in the side of the TV, but I haven’t bothered with it yet.

The picture is stunning, right out of the box. Absolutely beautiful. Only adjustment I made was to turn the brightness down slightly, as I have a very dark TV room.

The on-screen graphics and menus are both intuitive and elegantly designed. I hate when the industrial design is carefully considered, and the on-screen UI is forgotten. That didn’t happen here. Both are wonderful.

I somewhat skeptically connected my camera card reader to one of the USB plugs on the side, and inserted a memory card from my father’s camera. He’d hoped to show us pictures, but didn’t have a plan for how. Perfect timing, as the TV had arrived that day. The TV recognized the card, and very quickly we were watching pictures and video in high res on our new TV. Fantastic.

Less than perfect: the sound. Actually, it’s a bit of joke. But, that doesn’t effect my rating because I don’t feel that the internal speakers are really meant to be used w/ a TV like this. I’m using a 5 channel surround system, but before I hooked it up, I heard the speakers. It makes sense that they wouldn’t sound good since you can’t even see them.

Also less than perfect was the delivery process via this company, CEVA/Eagle. Note that they claimed to have contacted me via email to set up delivery, but I never rec’d anything. They didn’t call. So, I had to google them and call them. Plan for this! Stay on top of them. The driver called me no less than 4 times during the day, each time making up some goofy excuse for being even later. I think he was watching the NCAA tournament at a bar somewhere. But, in the end, it arrived 1 day late, and in perfect condition. So, I don’t care. And, I can’t take away a star from the TV due to the delivery service. I just think Amazon needs to communicate the process better with it’s customers and make sure that CEVA does a better job too.

Anyway, Amazon’s price is great, the TV is fabulous. Enjoy!

Beautiful, Feature Rich and Future Proof5
I returned the 40A630 that I bought last month because of one dead pixel, and I replaced it with this spanking new model (date first available at Amazon on March 9th). This LCD TV is really beautiful - the “Red Touch of Color” is not quite subtle but I’m sure you’ll like it as much as I do (it will match whatever furniture you have). The picture quality of this model (100,000:1 contrast ratio) is quite stunning compared to the 40A630 (40,000:1) that I returned.

This TV offers the newly introduced Internet@TV. Currently, only Samsung B series has this feature, other manufacturers will incorporate this feature in their future models. This feature is better than the first generation Infolink (RSS feed) that’s offered by the A series. You can actually add all sorts of TV widgets, which in the next couple of months will include some of the big online content providers (NY Times, Netflix, eBay, Twitter, Google, etc). Currenly, only Yahoo widgets are available (news, weather, Flickr, finance). You can connect your TV to the internet via ethernet, or you can plug Samsung’s Wireless USB adaptor (sold separately) in one of the 2 USB ports.

Other notable features:
a) 2 USB 2.0 slots - I use one slot for the included flash drive which contains the TV manual, and the other slot for my 8GB flash containing pictures, music and video.
b) Content Library - Intenal flash with preloaded content like cooking recipes, artwork screensavers, games, and pre-school children contents. You can download more contents from the internet. I don’t find this feature interesting. I tried it twice during the first week, and I haven’t explored it again since.
c) Swivel base - I think Samsung is the only brand that offers this feature, which I find really useful.
d) Firmware upgrade via direct internet connection.

Get this TV, you won’t regret it. Your friends will be envious if you tell them about the great features of this TV, which are not yet available in LCD TVs prior to March 2009.

I bought this from Electronics Expo, one of the most reliable merchants of Amazon. The company is located in New Jersey — a) quick delivery because I live in New York City, and b) no sales tax because I live in New York.

Amazing TV5
You have to get one of these! We received our unit yesterday afternoon and was watching HD within 5 - 10 minutes. Setup is very easy (CEVA set up TV) and after connecting HDMI cables, you’re good to go. Color, picture, clarity, detail - absolutely amazing!!

No motion blur, no jerkiness or fuzziness, no broken frame appearance. Glare does not appear to b an issue as we have one end of our room in 70% glass. SO far, on a sunny day, no problem.

The “B” model is physically different than the “A” model. The frame has a slight Vee at the bottom of the unit and the base is now rectangular with a 2 inch clear post. The TOC red is nice - sort of dresses up the unit.

We had never seen one of the models, so made the purchase cold. My wife and I cann0t be more pleased with the buy. We sat, almost open mouthed last night watching a movie. I have never seen her impressed over a TV set, until now.

CEVA kept my unit in Sacramento, Ca. for 5 days before delivery. They did deliver before the window of time closed on the stated delivery date. However, they noted, as in the prior review, that I had been contacted for delivery. I had not, so had to get thier info to make contact and arrange delivery. The delivery team did an excellent job, set he whole thing up for me and made sure I was satisfied.

Blu-ray (Samsung P-1500) works great and “Anynet” feature works great. I have not had to touch one control on the tv for any adjustment. Speakers are fine, unless you are an audiophile, or want movie theater sound effects.

Excellent TV and highly recommended!

Excellent Picture Quality (Unless you need a matte screen)5

**May 14, 2009 — I’ve updated my final calibration

I just received my LN46B650 today so I may update this review in time. Feel free to comment with questions and I’ll try to respond to them in later updates.

UNBOXING
The box for the LN46B650 comes is not too much larger than the TV dimensions itself. Sometimes you’ll see a 32″ TV come in a box that could easily fit one much larger. I wouldn’t exactly call it environmentally friendly, but the box easily fit through doorways and into the elevator of my apartment building. The box is fitted with Styrofoam at the corners to keep the TV in its place and inflated plastic bags filling in all the empty space. There is the typical screen protective plastic in place and I found that the TV came in excellent condition with no noticeable shipping damage. I did not use Amazon.com’s shipping company, the handling of other shippers may vary.

In the box is the stand (which comes with assembly instructions, though mine was already assembled), remote, 2 x AA batteries, a USB flash drive containing multimedia content and the TV instruction manual, a cover for the bottom of the TV in case you wish to mount it on a wall, a cleaning cover, screws for securing the stand to the TV, a power cord and a software CD for connecting the TV to a Windows Vista or XP computer via ethernet connections.

Moving the box by myself was a bit difficult as it is still quite larger, once I got it out of the box though, the TV is very light for a 23 year old male and getting it on the stand was very easy. Once on the stand it snaps in place, you can (optionally) insert screws to keep it locked into the stand.

Inserting the power cord and connecting my components to the TV was easy, but the cable management system for the TV is pretty much non existent — cables pretty much dangle behind the TV.

There is a lot of debate about whether the Touch of Color Red Design is a good thing or bad thing. Also, you’ll see on last year’s models that some people claim it’s barely noticeable while some people claim it’s a major game changer. My TV sits on a black TV stand in a spot in the room that sits in the shade — I can barely see the red color. However, I feel that if you were to shine a lot of light on it, it would quickly become very noticeable.

The bezel is not quite as thick as I thought it looked in the Amazon.com pictures (which are Samsung’s official PR shots). There is a somewhat “fat” pointed chin which I don’t think looks too terrible. If you look at the pictures you’ll notice that the glass of the bezel extends about half an inch beyond the actual TV bezel, I kind of like it. The neck of the stand is a glass pillar and very nice looking. The stand itself is surprisingly deep compared to the TV stand, but, again, not a bad thing, it’s just hard to see in the pictures.

The built in TV controls sit on the bottom right hand corner of the bezel and are impossible to see from more than a foot away. It’s a good thing for watching movies, but when I told somebody how to lower the volume on the TV, they couldn’t find the buttons. I should also note that the buttons are touch sensitive there’s no tactile way to find them or get feedback when pressing them. To the right of the buttons is a red light that turns on when the remote is pressed or the TV controls are pressed. It is otherwise always off unless the TV is in standby.

I should point out that the TV is very glossy and during very dark scenes it is absolutely necessary to shade your windows. Even when the not in dark scenes, I found that the bezel reflects what the screen does not. When I closed my blinds, the TV looks absolutely superb. The bezel is no longer noticeable, dark scenes are fantastic.

The remote is fairly straight forward. The design is just a tiny bit red like the TV bezel, buttons are nice and large and easy to memorize. The backlight button for the remote sits in the top right corner of it and when pressed illuminates the keys fairly well.

There are a good number of connectivity options which are thoroughly explained on the Amazon.com specs or on Samsung’s website.

MENUS/SETTINGS
Turning the TV sent me through a few welcome menus that I didn’t particularly want. The first thing the TV did was begin scanning for channels — but I have my cable box connected via HDMI so there was nothing to scan. Stopping the channel scan process was easy, though, and when I got out of the welcome menus and switched to the HDMI 1 source, the TV was easy to use.

The menu layout is not atypical of other HDTVs you may have had the chance to use. Pushing the menu button brings up a series of menus indicated by pictograms for picture, audio, antenna setup, general TV setup, input setup, Application (media/internet functions) and Help. One thing I don’t like, is that one feature that I like to be able to adjust on the fly, automotion plus (or refresh rate), is buried in menu -> picture -> picture options -> Auto Motion Plus. It’s a pain to get to if you’re just trying to adjust the setting for one channel.

The menu gives you very simple descriptions for each setting that you’re adjusting. Sometimes they’re fairly obvious but I imagine for some people it clears up some ambiguity. For an example, when I highlight “color” the bottom of the menu reads, “Adjusts the color saturation of the picture using the bar on the screen. The closer to 100, the more saturated the color.”

I connected my TV directly to my computer network via ethernet cable. I had absolutely no issue in setting this up, the TV detected my network settings without any problems.

One nice feature is that you can rename the sources on your TV to pre-designated alternates. For an example, I named HDMI1 “Cable Set Top Box” and HDMI2 “Game” and Component1 “DVD.” It makes things easier for non-technical people. Picture settings are always retained based on the source, if you keep your HDMI source on “movie” mode and adjust the picture settings, every time you watch HDMI these settings will be restored.

FEATURES
I need to start out with my favorite feature on the TV: Customized Auto-Motion Plus. For those of you not familiar with the feature, it’s what Samsung calls their 120hz capabilities. If you look at older LCD TV screens you might find that the picture tends to look blurry or judders in fast motion sequences. This technology, found in most middle and high-end LCD HDTVs in 2009, adds in extra frames to smooth out the motion.

On my old XBR4, I could adjust the 120hz to either off, standard or high. On the LN46B650, I can adjust the blur from 0-10 and the judder from 0-10. It’s a great feature, I’m still toying around to figure out what I like most for which content.

Other unique features not in other brands is the Internet Content which includes a series of Yahoo Widgets. I must point out that these features are VERY slow regardless of your internet connection. It takes about 20-30 seconds to start them up initially after you turn your TV on and then take about 5 seconds to load from that point on. There is a significant lag when switching through the widgets content. The built in widgets include weather, news, flickr and finance. I’ve heard there are more widgets coming out soon — possibly a Netflix widget? — but as of April 30, 2009, there are none available. I’m praying that future firmware updates to the TV fix some of the slow speed. cnet.com provides a more thorough review of these features.

The TV also comes with a fair amount of material stored in its internal memory and Samsung also includes it on a flashdrive which you can tweak on your personal computer. Pushing the content button on the remote closes whatever your watching and offers you a photo gallery which has pictures of art in slide show form (accompanied by adjustable music), a few recipes (why? Do people actually want to read recipes off of their TV screen? Is somebody putting a 46 inch LCD HDTV in their kitchen? I must say, though, the pictures of the food looks good), games (haven’t tried these yet, I don’t know if I ever will), children (a bunch of stories that look like flash cartoons with subtitles for kids to read along with), and wellness (a bunch of nature audio tracks and a few piano pieces). There is a total of 189 MB on the TV set aside for this content, you can download more of it off the internet or load it on via USB flashdrive or hard drive. It’s really nothing too exciting, I have no intention to use it. But, I will point out, that it’s far easier to use and faster than the Yahoo Internet Widgets.

The TV hooks up to an external hard drive or flash drive. I connected my 4 GB flashdrive with a bunch of movies formatted for my iPod on it. The TV played them without any problems, but the stretched content did not look too good — that’s no surprise considering the iPod screen is less than 3 inches in size. Eventually I might try to move some saved HD content to my flash drive.

The Help section of the menu is fantastic for those who are not familiar with HDTV settings.

There is a “product guide” which pretty much explains how to use most of the TV’s internet and content features, an explanation of how HD picture quality varies and works — pretty much a powerpoint presentation — and how you can use the TV’s settings to get the most out of basic features and an explanation of how to save energy with TV settings.

A self-diagnosis section brings up a sample HD picture or audio track to test to see if there is a problem with your TV. I imagine if you start seeing artifacts on your TV or quality problems it might be a good way to see if it’s the TV or a component you have connected to it.

This section also gives you contact info for samsung and is where you go to upgrade the TV firmware. Your TV is not usable when upgrading its firmware (or internal software). There has been a software upgrade issued since this TV reached the market. It takes less than 2 minutes to download and install over cable internet.

You’ll find that there is a myriad of picture adjustments you can make. As I mentioned, the 120Hz refresh rate and dejudder modes, also called automotion, is superb. There are five color temperature presets, I like the warm2 the best with the naked eye but you can make custom adjustments to the white balance and colorspace settings. There’s a film mode to use 2:3 pull-down — including on 1080i sources — gamma adjustment, dynamic contrast control, black tone controls and a flesh tone setting which I haven’t toyed with at all. You can adjust the aspect ratio to turn overscan on and off or to stretch the picture, etc. These are typical on most mid-high end HDTVs for 2009. There is also picture-in-picture via different sources available if you use features like that.

There are also some energy saver features, which will adjust the brightness and other power consuming functions as you wish, but you’ll probably see a decrease in picture quality the more these are turned on.

PERFORMANCE
I haven’t had a chance to get out any calibration equipment and do anything serious to see how the TV looks at it’s best. Out of the box, my first impression is that the picture quality is superb. I made some quick tweaks based on my personal preferences, but the colors seem to be very deep and accurate to my eye. Blacks are very very dark. I saw an early review of this TV that complained of clouding on the TV at the corners, I haven’t seen any evidence of that no matter how dark I try to make the room. The screen appears to be very uniform from what I can tell with the naked eye. I might do some tests later, but I think some people have already done so on avsforum.com.

I can’t imagine the typical viewer being disappointed with any aspect of the picture. It’s probably the best HD picture I’ve ever seen, though I haven’t seen most of the 2009 models, I’m gauging this based on 2008 models. But in sum: great contrast, accurate colors, great customizable processing, deep blacks, uniform screen.

I know there is some confusion about whether this is 10-bit or 8-bit unit, and I can’t be positive (is there a good way to check?). I will say that there is no noticeable color banding at all that you might see in an 8-bit unit.

I took a look at SD content from both a DVD (via component cables with no upscaling) and cable TV. Obviously, it’s no where near as good as HD content. I will say that if you want a TV at this size, regardless of what TV you get, you should shell out the bucks for HD broadcasting or at least a blu-ray player. With that said, the SD quality is pretty good. The picture still looks detailed with good noise reduction and gets rid of most of the moire issues you might encounter on other sets.

The sound quality is fine. Nothing great. The speakers of the TV fire downwards, so sometimes it sounds like that the voices of people on the TV are coming from the TV stand rather than the screen. I use my own speakers for most content and I suggest you consider doing the same if you’re an audiophile. I won’t go into sound quality much more than that because if you really expect a flat panel TV to have mind blowing sound, you need to reassess your expectations.

If you’re a gamer, and I mean a *serious* gamer, and need a very fast response rate, then you might want to consider a different TV. Even when game mode on this TV is turned on, you won’t be 100% pleased. If you’re a more typical gamer or don’t play games, this should NOT affect your opinion of this TV. I’ve played my xbox 360 and it is more than apt for the typical gamer. I can’t imagine casual gamers running into issues especially since gaming where timing is crucial — like guitar hero or rock band — allow you to calibrate the game to compensate for any delay. I’ve tried playing with my xbox 360 a little bit on it and I haven’t had any problems. I also should point out that I watched the Netflix live streaming HD content via xbox 360 connected over HDMI and the content looks superb.

As I mentioned before, the automotion features of this TV are superb. I love being able to adjust it to my preferences exactly. If you get this TV, you won’t be disappointed with that feature.

WRAP UP…
The Picture quality of this TV is absolutely superb compared to all the 2008 LCDs I’ve seen and I imagine it is one of the best of the 2009 models. The features are expansive but you’ll probably not end up using the internet or media content built in unless Samsung improves it. The screen is glossy so beware of bright rooms! Don’t forget that — I mentioned it early in the review. Otherwise, I can’t imagine a better picture from an LCD.

Feel free to ask questions in the comment and I’ll try to update again soon.

–UPDATE: May 1, 2009 — CLARIFICATION ON GAMING
So there was a question as to what the problem is for gamers. Let me be clear, the graphics quality with games is still excellent on my xbox 360. I have played with 120hz at full with the games and the processing is very good. I’ve also played with game mode turned on which exchanges some of the picture quality for better latency.

Before I continue, let me note, once again, that this is NOT a problem for a large majority of gamers.

So then what’s the problem? When comparing this TV to a high end computer monitor there is a bit more input lag. For most people, this is completely undetectable, but it is there despite that this TV has far superior picture quality to pretty much every other LCD out there in the price range.

For those of you not familiar with input lag, what it basically means is that when you use a video game, there is a slight delay (and I’m talking nano or miliseconds) between when you press a button on the controller/mouse/keyboard and when the change is registered on the screen. There is ABSOLUTELY no TV or computer screen out there that has 0 lag and there are other factors that play in here (such as the speed of the computer or game console).

I did a few homemade tests and I estimate that the input latency is about 30-35 ms on average with game mode turned on or about 100-120 ms with game mode turned off. That score is actually pretty good compared to most LCD TV screens in this price range, but doesn’t keep up with some of the high end Panasonics which are renowned for their low latency. For most people, anything less than 150-200 ms is usually perfectly fine. For others who play a lot of online games with their PC hooked up to their computers and need maximum efficiency, they might want to look at some Panasonic models.

Please be careful, the response rate on the TV is rated at 4 ms. That is true. The pixels on this TV should average a 4 ms response rate which is excellent. What I’m talking about here is the lag it takes for the TV to register a change made in a game controller, through the game console or computer and through the TV video processing. The input lag has nothing to do with picture quality — in fact, it’s likely that less input lag also means less picture quality — or audio quality. It will not be noticeable to most gamers.

–UPDATE: May 1, 2009– SD Picture Quality
I’ve had a chance to watch a lot more SD quality broadcast on SD channels and have to say that after tweaking some settings, I’m really thoroughly impressed. This is some of the best SD rendering I’ve seen on an HD set. Colors pop very well and the AMP cleans up a lot of the blur well when you get it to just the right settings. I spent some time last night watching baseball games switching between HD and SD feeds and found that I could get the movement of the ball and swing of the bat to look pretty good on an SD feed and when in HD, the AMP handles it very well in 1080i. 720p actually looks a bit better when following balls hit into the field, but this is to be expected with progressive rather than interlaced video (there’s a long explanation I could go into for this, but, for simplicity sake: 720p/1080p will show most motion better but is especially good when the entire picture is moving — like camera pans — 1080i is actually pretty good when the camera is steady and there is one object moving on the screen, but terrible when the camera pans or there are a lot of objects in motion).

–UPDATE May 14, 2009 — “FINAL” CALIBRATION
This is my updated settings for what I consider my final calibration for the TV. Please note that your results will undoubtedly vary if you perform your own calibration or hire a professional to do it for you. Also note that I did this for a blu-ray source, often you’ll find you want different settings for different sources. (NOTE: ALL TVs ARE DIFFERENT, EVEN WITH THIS MODEL, THESE MAY NOT BE YOUR IDEAL SETTINGS)

If you’re not picky or usually don’t calibrate your TV, there’s really no need to do much to the default settings. However, you might notice — as I’ve noticed on my own TV — that the blacks tend to be a tiny bit blue tinted on the default settings. My largest goal with these settings was to calibrate the TV accurately, but mainly get rid of that slight blue tint.

–UPDATE May 8, 2009 — COMMENT ON B650 vs B750
A comment was posted in reply to this review that the B750 is a hands down choice over the B650. I just wanted to note that the B750 probably is a superior model to this one, but it comes at a higher price.

There are three key changes to the B750 model: 240hz refresh rate, a matte screen, 150,000:1 contrast ratio. This all costs about an additional $250-$300 depending on when/where you buy. For some people, that isn’t much of a difference when you’re already spending nearly $2000 on a TV, and if that’s the case, I see no reason not to buy the b750 model.

I think it’s also worth note, however, that cnet and other reviewers have argued that the benefits of 240hz refresh rates over 120hz is fairly insignificant and difficult to notice (see their reviews for the Sony XBR9 series and last year’s Sony KDL-52XBR7). Their chief TV critic argues in separate article in 2008 that 240hz was not worth waiting for. But, I still think it’s worth going into a store and taking a look at the differences between 240hz and 120hz before making a final decision.

The matte screen is really a matter of preference and your room. I’ve already noted in this review that the B650 screen is very glossy and, in dark scenes, may reflect ambient light in the room. A matte screen should reduce these problems (though it’s unlikely it will completely eliminate them). At the same time, a glossy screen can make colors “pop” more and sometimes make blacks look even deeper.

As far as dynamic contrast ratio is concerned, there is a lot of debate in the A/V community about how these measurements are taken and how well they can be used to judge actual quality. The dynamic contrast ratio is a measure of the difference between the screen’s whitest white and blackest black. That means they measure the white with the TV screen brightness at maximum and the black with the brightness at its darkest. These measurements can further be thwarted by the coating on the screen (a matte screen vs a glossy screen on top of the same panel will yield different results). Also, there are absolutely no standards in how these measurements are taken. That means that Samsung can use different methods to measure the contrast ratio on different models. Likewise, Sony likely uses a very different measurement system than Samsung. That’s not to say the B750 contrast ratio is the same (or worse) than the B650, I’m just saying that it may not be discernible to your eye. You need to judge it yourself.

As I’ve said, the best way to evaluate these differences are to see the models in person. If you do, make sure that you are watching an HD source (preferably a 1080p blu ray player) and that each TV is connected to the HD source in the same way and are showing the same movie. I bought this TV because I needed one before the b750 was scheduled to be released, otherwise I might have given the b750 much greater consideration.

–UPDATE May 8, 2009 — ONE WEEK IN….
So I’ve had this TV for 8 days now and I have to say that I’m still very please with my choice. One item I have noticed that I didn’t point out before is that the bezel does pick up some dust. I think this is because when it was in the box it developed some electrical charge. Hence, Styrofoam kind of stuck to the bezel a little bit. A few swipes around the bezel with a swifter seemed to get all the dust off. Since then, I have tried to avoid touching the bezel as it does pick up finger prints fairly easily. However, I, for one, rarely touch my TV screen and don’t mind this as it gives the TV a nice glossy look (which makes it better to look at it when it’s turned off).

Another feature I wish Samsung had included would have been a height adjustable stand. I know that most TV’s don’t have this option, but I feel like the TV sits just an inch or two too low for my tastes. I measured the distance between the bottom of the base and the bottom of the actual screen and it’s about 6.5 inches. If you want the screen any higher, you’ll either have to get a higher TV stand or wall mount the screen.

Another feature I’ve tried using is the automatic volume control, which I haven’t been too impressed with. As I said earlier, I didn’t expect much from the TV speakers and usually use my own sound system. But, if you’re expecting to use the TV speakers, don’t expect much from the auto-volume control. What the feature is supposed to do is keep the volume consistent between channels and sources. I actually found myself adjusting the volume *more* when this feature was turned on than when it was turned off.

Also, a quick update on the Yahoo! Widgets: there are a bunch of new ones out! There are a few games available now and an app for Twitter and Yahoo video. I installed the latter two and can say that, though I don’t really use twitter much, it’s kind of neat being able to see all your friends’ updates from your TV screen when you’re too lazy to check a computer or cell phone.

The Yahoo video content isn’t exactly HD quality. In fact, it looks significantly worse than typical SD cable quality. I suppose that should be expected since the video content is meant to be played on the web. The video selection isn’t as broad as you might see on YouTube, but it’s fairly well categorized. I watched a few movie trailers on it before I decided I’d rather watch the HD quality ones on my 15 inch laptop.

The speed of the widgets have improved a tiny bit. Once you update the TV firmware to version 1007, you might see a moderate improvement. However, going through the various screens to try to access an item like a Yahoo video can feel slow and tedious. I think Samsung and Yahoo have a nice idea here, but it’s hardly a winner.

Yet, my biggest priority when buying an HDTV was the picture quality and in that respect this TV is still a definite winner. Even from off-angle viewing, I’ve been very impressed by the color accuracy, black levels, screen uniformity and video processing. Add that to its superb connectivity, an attractive design and usability and that’s why I continue to give this TV five stars, hands down. The cons of the TV have been mostly what I consider secondary features: internet functions being slow and the audio not being anything special.

Feel free to keep asking questions in the comments section and I will try to reply when I can.

Also, check out the reviews on the other size models of the B650 series as you should see very similar video quality. If you’re into tech talk, it’s also worth checking out some of the discussion on avsforum.com where they have a decent thread started on the B650 models. I’m not a participant, but some people have provided a good bit of insight.

Unbelievable Picture Quality5
I purchased this item last week 3-27-09 without the luxury of any reviews posted.. Just the picture I saw at B.B… I also purchased the Blue Ray player… The picture on this TV is Awesome… Better than I expected. Get the Blue Ray… I watched a movie on it the other night… Never knew what I was missing! This TV has all the bells & whistles as the 46A850 model with the upgrade to 100,000 : 1 contrast ratio. Sound is great. Picture is great… Easy to set up… Delivery from Amazon better than expected. Had people over to watch the final 4 NCAA last night… One gentleman kept walking up to the TV & asking his wife why his new SONY didn’t look even close to this… Swivel stand is also Key to me… Red touch of color is not noticeable unless you look very close… Then you appreciate it! Hope this helps… Happy shopping

Samsung makes great TVs… 5 stars for this model!5
There are lots of in-depth reviews of this TV on the web, so I won’t go in to too much detail here. I will say that the picture quality is awesome on this model, and that I’m very happy with my purchase. The red touch of color isn’t too obvious (I still wish Samsung would abandon the TOC though). The swivel base is nice, too.

The “auto-motion plus” (AMP) feature is improved over the 2008 model by allowing you to fine-tune the settings more. AMP is the technology that fills in extra frames (120Hz) so video doesn’t look so “jerky”. Owners of the 2008 model sometimes had complaints that they could not adjust the AMP setting enough to their liking. The 2009 model allows greater customization.

“Game mode” helps eliminate the lag when playing games. Once I turned this mode on, there was no lag when playing “Rock Band” and other games on the PS3.

I am using HDMI v1.3b cables that only cost a dollar from BargainCell. Images are awesome. Don’t spend more than that for HDMI cables!!! Research the web or look at the reviews for HDMI cables on Amazon to find out why. You will not notice any difference in image quality no matter how expensive an HDMI cable is.

The sound on the TV is a little flat, and doesn’t have much bass. But I am hooking my PS3 and DirecTV sound to an Onkyo receiver and Energy speakers (which sound great!), so it didn’t matter to me.

Keep in mind that the 650 models (like this one) have a gloss panel. This causes reflections to show from windows and lights. If you’re looking for the semi-matte screens that help cut down on this, you’ll want to check out the 630 models.

My TV was shipped via Pilot freight services. They made a courtesy call to me stating that because of where I live, that one of their partners (a moving company) would be making the delivery. As a result, it tacked on a few extra days for the product to arrive, but it arrived in perfect condition and the moving company set up the TV and made sure it worked and that I was happy with it before they left.

All-in-all, I’m definitely pleased with this TV.

50,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio
Contrast and brightness levels achieve new heights in this LCD TV. Watch movies and shows come to life with enhanced details in very dark or bright scenes. Enjoy a more realistic, sharper picture quality that’s sure to catch your eye.

Built-In Digital Tuner
All Samsung LCD HDTVs have an integrated digital tuner. So, whether you’re watching over-the-air HD digital broadcasts or connecting to cable/satellite service, Samsung has got you covered.

Game Mode
Get in the game with enhanced blacks, sharp picture quality and optimum audio. At the touch of a button, game mode speeds up the image processing response so you get the most out of your gaming experience.

Contrast and brightness levels achieve new heights with a 50,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio.
A very fast 6ms response time virtually eliminates any blurring and gives you smooth-motion action scenes.

6ms Response
One of the most important features for an LCD panel is the pixel response time. Response time refers to the amount of time it takes a pixel to “refresh” itself-to go from being active to being inactive, (ready to be re-activated). The lower the milliseconds, the faster the response time. A very fast 6ms response time virtually eliminates any blurring and gives you smooth-motion action scenes.

Wide Color Enhancer 2
Whereas blue and green shaded areas of the picture are washed out on conventional screens, wide color enhancer lets you experience more brilliant colors. Simply imagine a wider range of color than you ever thought possible.

ENERGY STAR Compliant
By being ENERGY STAR compliant you are assured that your SAMSUNG model is helping the environment by using less energy while saving you money. ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy promoting energy efficiency.

SRS TruSurround HD
Assisted by the LN32B460’s two 10W bottom speakers, this creates an immersive, feature-rich surround sound experience from two speakers, complete with rich bass, high frequency detail and clear dialog.

Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?

HDTV Size chart With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience. If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get.

Samsung rocks5
This is my second Samsung HDTV and it’s outstanding. This model includes a QAM turner which I didn’t know much about until I did some research. If you have cable, the QAM tuner allows you to receive an HD signal from the major networks without the need for a special cablebox. I can simply plug in the cable and receive most of my cable channels (but not the digital channels) and the HD signals for CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX and PBS without a box. I was amazed.

Samsung stands out in hdtv!!!5
Very impressed with my new Samsung LN32B460. very easy to set up with the on screen plug and play setup.Bought this tv for my bedroom looks great with the sleek design and appereance. The contrast is unreal life like picture. Can’t beat the price of 599.00 plus free shipping and no TAX!!!Fast delivery ordered on 04-19-09 recieved it on 04-22-09.Highly recommend the Samsung LN32B460 32-Inch 720p LCD HDTV

Nice Looking But Problem Already?3
TV arrived delivered from CEVA in perfect condition. However, when I plugged it in, there’s a high pitched buzzing sound. When I unplug, it is not there. Anyone else had this issue? I will be calling Samsung to report and ask for options. I’ll review my rating afterwards.

**Update ao 5-29-09: Called Samsung and was told a tech would come for in-home servicing. Called service company to schedule the appt. but was told I would have to mail it in and it could take up to 21 days for servicing and return. I called Amazon Customer Service and they are sending me a new unit and the delivery people will pick up the defective unit and take it back. I am much more satisfied with Amazon’s swift resolution than Samsung and their vendor servicing through CVE. Apparently, any sets under 37 inches must be mailed to their facility for servicing. The only concession is that they will extend your warranty by 90 days but on the other hand, you’re out of the tv for almost a month! Amazon handled the transaction very well. Will update rating upon re-delivery.

Customer Reviews

Great TV, bad quality control from Samsung4
Let me say that this TV is one of the best in the market for the price point. The pros are too many to list and so far has been a great choice as far as features and performance. I’m an early adapter for HDTV in 03 going from a Zenith C32V37 RP CRT (4:3); which unfortunately is getting replaced due to a humming power supply. The B750 can match the black levels of the RP CRT and has no clouding or flashlighting that I was seeing on the A750/A850 sets, which my wife and I almost decided to get. With Amazon’s pricepoints coming very close to the discounted price of the previous generation Samsung sets it was a no brainer.

Now onto the Cons, I would have given this B750 5 stars if not for the crappy Samsung Quality Control. I received my TV out-of-the-box with a remote that had 5 dead/non-working buttons= mute, up arrow, play, red options button and “1″. Also, after 2 days of setting up the TV and getting all our inputs connected using almost all of them (analog & digital); yes even both USB ports, the HDMI inputs 1-3 stopped working properly. Now, those inputs will only take the signal from the HDMI 4. EG: If I select HDMI 1-3 and have a source such as Bluray running on the HDMI 4 (side-port) it will display that source signal. Talk about disappointing QC. After a few calls to Amazon and Samsung; I will be getting a new remote and have Samsung’s local service technician out to fix the HDMI input problem. I can’t believe these QC issues out-of-the-box are occuring for such as middle-tier to higher end line of prodcut; very poor testing on Samsung’s part.

Overall, I am very satisfied with the performance of the B750 but very disappointed with their QC process which can be greatly improved. In my 20-30+ years of owning electronic equipment I have never encountered these types of QC problems out-of-the box with any products.

Good TV with Some Overlookable Issues4
This is the first TV I’ve ever purchased and it’s a great buy. I was hoping to read some professional reviews before I bought this, but with the Amazon $300 coupon being a limited time offer and my 6x points (basically a 6% cash back) on my Amazon card ending at the end of this month, I had to take advantage of this opportunity now. I think I made a good choice. Up until I got this TV, I’ve been using a Dell 24″ 2405FPW LCD monitor (really a Samsung screen that still gets more positive reviews than new cheaper 24″ Dell LCD monitors).

I don’t want/need to repeat most of the positive comments other reviewers have already mentioned, so I’ll talk about topics not well covered.

240 Hz Auto Motion Plus: The default setting is “standard.” I don’t have regular TV, so I connected my PS3 and popped in my Iron Man Blu-Ray disc. I quickly noticed the high quality resolution of my HDTV, but after some moments, I realize how the movie had a TV soap opera look and how some things just didn’t seem right. The lighting was more sterile and bright instead of dramatic and when there was a scene where the camera moved, it felt like I was watching a 4:3 formatted pan & scan movie instead of a modern wide-screen movie. After checking out the TV settings (not having a paper manual was a little annoying, but quite a bit of paper was saved, since the PDF version is about 290 pages due to the multi-language versions), I realize that it’s the 240Hz AMP that was making my movie experience more TV-like. I tried all the different preset AMP settings (i.e., Off; Clear; Standard; Smooth; Demo, which shows AMP off next to AMP on at the same time), I came to find that I like the “Clear” setting, which is the minimum setting with 240Hz on, the most. The lighting then looked like what I remember from the theater and the scenes still seem smooth and clear. AMP not only gives the appearance of more frames/second, but also more clarity. You’ll notice a big difference when you take the time to watch the same scene over and over again with different settings. My guess is that it will probably work best with TV shows that have fast moving scenes and bright lighting like sports programs.

Computer Files: This feature is so cool. Video files which were originally computer-only can now be watched on my TV without any additional hardware. I think this TV can play more versions of MPEG and DIVX than my PS3 can (it says it in the Samsung manual, but I didn’t do a side-by-side comparison). I can take an AVI file from my computer, copy it to a USB compact flash disk, then plug it into my HDTV and watch it in the full 46″ glory. The remote offers some simple fast forward and rewind capability (the longer you hold down the buttons, the greater it moves forward and backward, respectively) and rewinding doesn’t jump as smoothly as forwarding, but it’s bearable.

Ethernet Connection: My FiOS modem/router is in my bedroom and my HDTV is in the living room. I couldn’t test it, but considering that the wireless module for the Samsung TV is $80, I think I’m going to relocate my router. I wonder if there’s a cheaper workaround or if the Samsung USB WiFi module is proprietary.

Remote Control: It is a long controller which makes it a little uncomfortable to use without sliding your hand to reach some buttons and it has an unconventional wing at the bottom of the controller that’s there for weight balance. It also feels fragile because it looks shiny and lightweight. More negatives is that the buttons require me to either push them down at a different angle or just with more force. I hope that once I use the controller a little more, the buttons will be more sensitive. Right now, some of the buttons take me two or three times before they register because I am apparently not doing it right.

Delivery Service: I got the usual call about setting up my delivery date and time. They gave me a 4 hour delivery window and the 2 guys came around the end of the first hour, so it wasn’t a long wait. There was something on the form I signed about a blue screen test, but they didn’t test that for me (maybe it works only with TV reception?) and I didn’t see it when I skimmed through the manual either. Basically, they physically set it up, turned it on, and tested some menu options. Not a very scientific test, but I guess they completed their tasks. They didn’t stick around to get tipped either. I did stop them to hand them one though.

Ultra Clear Panel: I don’t know why the Samsung.com website says that it doesn’t have an UCP when it obviously does. The reflection is quite strong and I have very good daylighting in my living room from the windows, so the reflection can be annoying. However, the good viewing angle comes in handy, so I just sit at an angle from the screen (probably 20 degrees), and the reflection from my window goes away. I don’t notice any drop in contrast or color quality, so it’s not that big of a deal. Also, if you compare this to some of the reflection problems from older CRTs, it seems about the same. The big difference is that there may appear to be more reflection problems b/c this screen is just a lot bigger than most CRTs.

Overall, I am happy with my HDTV. I was very tempted to buy the 52″ version, but with the 30% premium over the 46″ (currently, the 52″ costs 21% more with the most recent limited-time coupon), I rather save the money for when I get a bigger apartment and when 60+” screens are in the best value range.

Samsung LN46B750 Review5
I am simply “speechless” regarding the Picture Quality with just a few adjustments out of the box!! This Samsung set is simply gorgeous with it’s glossy wet black piano like finish, not to mention how good it looks even when turned off! This set has many real world usable features in store for you, plus a ton of options for customizing the picture to suit your preferences.

You can also tailor the way your set handles the AMP or Auto Motion Plus 240Hz, from ultra smooth while watching sports with 0 motion blurr to a more realistic film like smoothness. This is the first LCD HDTV that I have seen to actually have whiter whites and blacker blacks, until now only plasmas were capable of dark jet blacks and whiter whites!

This Samsung LCD HDTV is more like a computer, instead of a paper manual it comes with a USB 2.0 flash drive (E-Manual) where you just plug it in and you can just scan the manual on your beautiful 46″ inch screen. You can also update the firmware version at anytime in the future for added features, bug fixes and maybe even hardware compatibility issues.

The sound I thought was pretty good for a flat panel, the remote is the icing on the cake. The remote is 100% backlit and has a nice glossy finish that fits well in hand. I did a lot of research on just about every HDTV on the market for a whole month and this set has the better picture quality of all the others out there, if you buy this set you won’t be disapointed one bit!

Samsung has come a long way in just a short amount of time, there products a hard to beat cost and performance wise! I bought this set from Amazon on Friday and was delivered the following Wednesday, I don’t know how Amazon managed that one quick shipment! A big thanks to the shipping company Pilot for their excellent friendly and help for getting it all set-up for me, the whole experience was joyful!

  • Minimum size = Viewing distance/3
  • Maximum size=Viewing distance/1.5

Customer Reviews

Great for mini home theater5
I’ve been an HDTV owner for six years and during that time, I’ve assisted about two dozen friends in their HDTV home theater setups. I’ve just upgraded to the Samsung LN52B750 and I couldn’t be happier. For reference, I’m upgrading from a Samsung DLP and I own another Samsung LCD HDTV.

There’s a lot that’s misunderstood about this TV, so rather than the usual Pros and Cons, I’d like to share how I’m getting viewing value from this set.

First, if you’re reading this, you’re either already an LCD owner or have read about them - and have read about this new breed and if you’re like I was, you’re wondering what’s what.

Color swirls - you never read about this, but if you’ve watched TV on an LCD set in the past, especially with standard def (SD) stations, you’ve seen it. The backgrounds look like compressed colors from jpg photo files. My earlier LCD HDTV (8ms response time) had it - this one simply does not. (I did have trouble watching compression artifacts in a movie from 1930 on TCM on this TV - but that movie was so hosed, I can’t blame the TV only.)

Contrast - you’ve read by now that all LCD set makers lie about this. If you’re confused and remember the old audio days, that works like this: You’d have a 35 watt RMS/channel amp (into 8 ohms). Some would lie and call it a 70 watt amp. Then lie some more and call it a 140 watt amp (how about 4 ohm speakers?). Then lie some more and refer to peak instead of RMS - and suddenly a 35 watt amp is legally lied about as a 200 watt amp. Now - I don’t know the ins and outs of legal contrast lying, but I believe what I’ve read - it exists in this industry. This set is rated at a contrast of 150,000:1 - with every stretch of legal lying possible - the contrast on this set is amazing. I still cannot believe that it’s an LCD. It’s simply that good in terms of contrast. One plasma-owning friend insisted for a half hour that I was wrong, and had gotten a top line plasma.

Blur/response/lag - LCDs are noted for this weakness. Not this TV. Read on.

Quality of SD programs - some controversy exists. Not a problem on this TV. Read on.

240 Hz AMP - this is the most misunderstood feature I’ve read about on this TV. Nothing I’ve read in any review prepared me for what to expect. I was buying the TV partially for this feature, noting that depending upon whom you believe, you turn this feature on, off, on for movies but not sports, on for sports but not movies.

It’s none of those on/off things. It’s adjustable. Here are my simple recommendations based on my setup:

1. DirecTV.

I use a Dayton HDMI cable, also bought on Amazon (amazingly good cable - buy it), from my DirecTV HR20. I have the HR20 set up to display all resolutions in Native mode. The LN52B750 switches resolution so quickly that this is not a problem. Unlike earlier sets I’ve owned, the HDMI input on this TV accepts 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p - the HR20 outputs all of those on HDMI. In DirecTV circles, it’s well-known to set your TV and your HR20 to the TV’s native resolution and turn Native output off on the HR20. This is because the HR20 is purportedly better at 3:2 pulldown processing than the top of the line chipsets/firmware used only a few years ago, in that the pulldown is done between the steps of converting the satellite signal to TV frames - and my own experience agreed with that.

However, I offer this simple advice - set your HR20 output to Native, all resolutions, and set the B750’s 240Hz processing to: Blur=5, Judder=3 - and you’ll be exceptionally happy with the results from all program input. My Boston Legal reruns have never looked so good and they appear on some of the poorest-signal (highly compressed) stations in my lineup. So, with this setting, SD as well as satellite 720p and 1080i programs look great - not fake at all. (And all you have to do to see the controversy on this feature is to “turn it on” without customizing its adjustment - and wait for your eyes and stomach to turn.)

I played baseball as a kid - loved it. Still remember what a ball looks like going through the air. When you’re at the right angle, you see a stobe of blur and clear, red stitches. With the Blur=5,Judder=3 adjustment, I have finally seen just that watching a dropping curve ball (720p source). Any higher or lower, the ball looks wrong - oh, yes, very exciting - but wrong.

So I strongly recommend this set for its 240 Hz processing - providing you are willing to change those two parameters slowly and study a lot of source material to dial in what’s right. I contend that if you’re a DirecTV HR20 owner, I’ve just given you the key to really great SD and HD viewing.

And don’t fear about those great blurs being missed from movies that wanted it there - Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire looked really great in that regard.

BTW - resolution switching on this set is FAST - you’ll experience little or NO extra delay when switching resolutions. (Not true on my older HDTVs.)

2. HTPC (Home Theater PC)

I use a Mac mini. I know, people hate them, you pay too much for Macs, yadda, yadda, yadda. The Mac mini is THE correct form-factor for a HTPC. You can find duplicates of this form-factor - and directly comparable features - in the Windows world for **exactly** the same price as a Mac mini - so, ’nuff said on price.

But - so far as a I know, only the built-in Apple DVD Player plays movies at 24 frames/second. Last I checked (and this may have changed by now), all other software (Win) does playback at TV rates: 60 frames/sec, with progressive scanning, etc.

Now - I’m not explaining all of this to brag about Macs - this is all about Blu-Ray vs. DVDs.

The de-judder tech being targeted by the 240 Hz processing is all about reconciling Blu-Ray 24 fps (read: real theater) vs. 30/60 fps (read: TV signals).

I don’t own a Blu-Ray player - my gut, after all of these years, is still telling me to wait for the right features and prices.

But, I do use a Mac mini for my HTPC and if you do - or are considering one - here is my recommendation (based on Leopard 10.5.7): set the DVD Player to Best Quality Deinterlacing, set the Mac Display preferences to 1920×1080 at 24 Hz (it’s progressive by default), and feed that into your LN52B750 with the 240 Hz options set to Blur=5 or 6, Judder=6 or 7 - and your jaw will drop. If you have a copy of Moulin Rouge - use it as your reference for the settings. I particularly recommend noting that you’ll actually see the dust kitties on the floor in the Tango Roxanne chapter (among other things) and also suggest that you’ll really love the depth and details of the stars, lace and glitter in Your Song.

With those settings you’ll not only get a great HTPC, but you’ll get possibly the best standard DVD player you’ve ever owned. Before the LN52B750, it was very good - now it’s really incredible. Ghost Dog and Moulin Rouge on DVD are now completely three dimensional (not exaggerated foreground fakey - actually 3-D looking) - I didn’t even know that this sort of picture was possible from a DVD.

I think my setup shows how well this TV works with a 1080p/24 fps source - I can only imagine that Blu-ray looks even better.

3. Sound

People complain about the sound quality of the LN52B750. I don’t know. I haven’t used a TV for sound in 8 years. I don’t wish to sound snobbish, but really - you’re spending a boatload on your TV and input sources, why listen to TV speakers?

I don’t go for surround sound. I’m an audio purest that prefers the highest fidelity stereo. To each his own, but if you’re like me, here’s the secret on that: route the optical audio out from the LN52B750 into the Mac mini, not from the DirecTV’s optical port. This routing is surprisingly better. Use Rogue Amoeba’s free LineIn software, set all buffers to default values except for output - use a buffer size of 2048 - convert the optical to copper stereo and pipe that into your stereo system. This is the best TV-to-stereo sound I’ve gotten in 8 years.

I’m using large electrostatic panels, driven by a 400 watt (peak)/channel amp and a 2 kW servo-controlled subwoofer. You hear sound from all over the room and the depth and spacial qualities are great. I recommend more money into a better stereo and less room wiring over surround sound, but that’s just me. To each, his own.

4. Miscellaneous Adjustments

Next, some words on clouding, screen adjustment and glare.

Glare - I don’t have any. Yeah - I can see some reflection in the screen at various times of the day. The picture quality is so deep - as is the contrast - that I don’t even notice glare, if it is there. And the screen is neither glossy nor matte. It feels glossy, but is low-glare like matte, but sharp and clear like glossy. They’re telling the truth on that improvement.

Clouding - let the set burn in for a few days before looking. This is great advice for any large LCD, by the way. Clouding - I don’t have any.

Adjustments: Go. Very. Slow. I’d recommend not touching a thing for a full 24 hours of viewing. So far, I’ve turned down the backlight and the contrast and turned up the brightness. I’m not going to suggest numbers here, though - there are too many factors, such as your room, that will dictate what’s right. I will say that out of the box, the contrast is too high, as is the backlight (but not the brightness) - so, as I said: Adjust. Each. Parameter. Slowly. You’ll be pleased.

5-26-09: Three things - absolutely *turn off* Dynamic Contrast and Edge Enhancement!! Also, Digital Noise Reduction (NR) defaults to auto - certainly on DVDs, this causes an electric sort of look to things like paper; better at Medium or High.

Color - I read a review that favored Auto over Native - I agree.

Film mode - It defaults to Auto2 (optimized for scrolling text). Use Auto1 (film optimized) - text looks just fine.

5. Internet

This is not a worthless feature. I thought it would be - but it isn’t. If you’re using a Mac mini and getting the net wirelessly, go to System Prefs->Network->Ethernet, and set DHCP with manual IP - set IP to 192.168.2.1 - then go to Sharing and share your Airport connection through the Ethernet. Run an Ethernet cable 100/1000BaseT type (looks like a big phone connector) from the Mac to the TV. Set the TV internet as follows: IP=192.168.2.2, mask=255.255.255.0, and BOTH Gateway and DNS Servers to 192.168.2.1 - and you’re all set.

Note - this doesn’t support your DLNA features into the TV - and if you have a HTPC, especially a Mac, you don’t want that anyway. Your music files will all have to transcode to support the feature - stick with your native music format, and simply switch to Mac Front Row for your music listening. You’ll get higher quality and you’ve already made those music import decisions - and I suspect the same is true if you’re a Vista/Home Media user and that’s your HTPC.

BUT - and this is a big BUT - if it’s easy, hook up your Mac or other HTPC to share its internet connection. You already get your OS upgrades via the net, regardless of whether you prefer OS X or Windows. Well, guess what? This TV is at its heart, a whole lot of computing technology. Out of the box, my LN52B750 firmware was marked from 3-30-2009 - and last week (in May 2009), Samsung already had a firmware upgrade for this set. What did Samsung upgrade? I don’t know and I don’t care. I let my Windows XP and Mac OS X computers upgrade themselves all the time. These guys want to fix things for free, I don’t argue - I take the fix.

Get it connected to the internet and you’ll never have to sweat getting an upgrade or remember how to transfer it to your TV via a USB stick. For upwards of US$2k, I like not sweating things. BTW, please note that at this point, the TV doesn’t seem to support automatic updates - so you still have to go over to that menu option. Not bad.

Having gotten that far, I tried out the Yahoo widgets. This is an underrated feature by far. I’m now set up to get the quick 5-day forecasts here, back where Mom is, and out where my company’s other locations are. It puts the TV show being watched into its own shadowbox while viewing the widget. This is insanely faster and easier than using my Mac Dashboard or the DirecTV widget for the same thing - and I never lost track of my show and I never picked up a mouse.

Oh - I also used Yahoo News and Video to get the latest web video of the Hubble repairs during a long commercial break. Sure, it was low-res. But I did it with my remote, and not a mouse, and didn’t lose track of time on the web looking at Hubble stuff during a commercial break.

So - I strongly recommend the internet connection option for this TV, too.

6. Heat

LCD sets get hot, the longer they’re on. I burned out my first LCD HDTV from days-long ontime. I left this TV on for 50 hours straight. It is summer (here in the desert), and I do have my swamp cooler on - but this TV screen is still barely warm to the touch.

7. Trusting commercial reviewers

Anyone who publishes that they’ve tested the X-inch model of this set, but this one is the same - don’t read them, don’t believe them. Quality control for manufacturing LCD sets increases almost exponentially as you go up in size. Only trust reviews on the actual set you’re looking at - not the next one over, not last year’s model.

8. LCD response time

This set is rated at 2 ms. I’ve heard that’s a lie in a review of 120 Hz sets - although the reviewer wouldn’t mention manufacturers. That reviewer said that they were simply taking 8 ms panels, and rating them at 4 ms when doing 120 Hz processing - and so, while my TV was in transit, I rightly wondered if the 2 ms is simply the same math applied to an 8 ms screen at 240 Hz (4 time as fast as 60 Hz, four times as fast as 8 ms).

I have no earthly idea. All that I can say for a certain fact is that this thing is razor sharp and lacks the motion artifacts (and swirls) I’ve seen on my other 8 ms LCD HDTVs. I hope this helps, some, with that confusion.

9. Actual Size

I don’t why it does this but it does: it sees my Mac via the DVI-HDMI connection and gives me a Fit Screen size adjustment. No more lost pixels, no more need for SwitchResX or DisplayConfigX. No such option from the DirecTV HDMI input. I don’t know why.

But I do know this: for years, HDTV makers were hiding a bit of the edges from their input sources - causing no end of grief for HTPC owners. This set does away with all of those woes.

(**** UPDATE, May 23 - The Screen Fit option works with any HD source - DirecTV or HTPC. Switch to 480i input, and the screen fit option goes away. Also - when you get the typical HistoryHD show where they just stretch the letterbox picture horizontally, giving everyone that Pillsbury Doughboy face, you can fix that by quickly switching the TV to 4:3 mode. You end up with an HD in letterbox - not as good as full-screen HD, but way better than watching the Pillsbury Doughboy.)

10. Correct Adjustment.

They tell us that the only way to do this is with a TV tech, and to pay for it professionally. Believe them. This TV has no less than 9 adjustments for red, green and blue - add in brightness, gamma, etc and you have over a dozen adjustments there.

Think: 12-sided Rubic’s cube - now you’ve got the idea.

So, I’m just adjusting the brightness/backlight/contrast myself. Independent reviewers all claim that the Samsung brand rocks right out of the box for color correctness. That wasn’t true of my older Samsungs - it most certainly is for this one. The color just looks great.

13. The Remote

I had things down to just my Mac remote and my DirecTV remote. Now I’ve got that third remote happening again, to use some of this TV’s cooler features. Just like most people use surround sound while I use stereo, it seems most people get integrated remotes instead of using several.

OK - I’m a Luddite or something. We use multiple remotes. (This one for music, sound, photos and DVD control, this one for DirecTV and now this one for switching source inputs and checking out my Yahoo widgets.) My wife and I just find this easier. So, if you’re like us in that regard:

This is a great remote. It feels comfy in the hands like you wouldn’t believe, it has backlighting, the buttons are big enough to read. What more can I say than that?

14. Viewing Distance

I watch mine at 12.5 feet from the screen. This is well within reason for this size TV. If you watch at a showroom, be prepared to pace off what your viewing distance will be. I often go through stores and see people judging HDTVs by being 8 feet in front of one, 12 feet in front of another. Don’t ever do that. I cannot overstate the importance of judging TVs from the distance consistent with your own use.

15. Pilot Delivery

I got my LN52B750 via Amazon’s supplied Pilot Delivery. These guys were great. Others have had issues, many haven’t. Pilot seems to employ local guys for their white glove delivery. My local guys were great - ’nuff said.

16. 6/13/2009 edit - If you register your TV on the Samsung website, they give you an additional 3 months on your warranty.

Well - that’s it. Thanks for reading. Hope I’ve helped.

Almost perfect4
Got this from Amazon at a good price, though I’m sure it will drop a little more as the year goes on.
This tv is spectacular! Absolutely stunning, jaw dropping picture. I can’t say enough about it. Excellent blacks, infinitely tweakable to your liking.
When I first turned it on I had the “The Office” come on and I swear my mouth stayed open for a few minutes as it looked like Michael was in the same room as me! Lots of inputs and features to this set, internet connectivity,DLNA,home networking, wonderful subdued TOC which is grey instead of the red on last years 750. Very high gloss bezel, crystal neck stand which pivots. Screen is glossy, reflections are not an issue for me as I tend to watch in a darker room, but even with the drapes open, I don’t see myself! AMP seems to work better in this set,as I also have an 4071 Samsung which has a slight problem with AMP,which has been well documented over at the AVSForums.

Just like anything else it is not perfect, hence the 4 stars instead of 5.
Sound is bad. I mean, you’ll want to hook this up to a nice stereo system,or at the very least,a couple of powered computer speakers or some such set.
This tv attracts dust like nobodies business.Either that or my house is really dirty. Front panel controls (which would be rarely used anyway) are hard to tell where they are (lower right). Yahoo widgets, which are kind of cool when you first see them, are eh,no big deal. Maybe as more become available I’d be more excited.
There is no printed manual,it’s on a usb drive, called an e-manual,and no it’s not Spanish! There’s some uneven lighting when screen is dark,(no signal)not sure if that’s an issue for me yet, doesn’t seem to affect any picture quality, but something to keep an eye on.

It is a 5 star tv,but the sound is what drops it 1. All other issues are no big deal.
Amazon delivery was good,no issues.Overall,I am extremely happy with it!
Now,for a good blu-ray player!

This LCD really is great!5
I know a lot of you are looking at a lot of hdtvs. Let me tell I looked at all the t.vs in best buy to see how they look. I saw the ln46b650 as it stood out from the rest with clarity. So i decided to take a gamble and pre order this one. I even owned a pn50a760 plasma and sent it back because it had poor clearity. This t.v has an extra setting for the upscaling which makes it ajust to the size making it a little clearer for normal dvds then the regular upscaling.
PROs for this t.v: Clearest picture i’ve seen so far for LCD. No artifacts on 240hz settings. The colors are bright and stunning. For you video game addicts. I have a ps3 and a xbox360 hooked up to it and let me tell you the game looks crisp and has no lag whats so ever.
Cons:The internet capabilities and media stuff arent exciting. Only thing its good for is maybe knowing the weather and uploading pictures on the tv when having family events. When people speak while playing video games they seem a little quiet other then that they sound pretty decent. The blacks are probally the best you can get for lcd but its still not as black as plasmas can get. Only other thing is its viewing angles, its best to sit at a centerish seat.

THe cons are very very minor overall this t.v I will recommend to anyone looking for something great in all area’s for the price. Regular Dvds look nice a sharp and blue rays look even better. Even my girlfriend that knows nothing about t.vs says WOW thats a lot better then the other one we sent back. YOu could also see the jealousy in my friends eyes.
I hope my technical comments help you decide if this is the t.v for you.
